Dialana-thong
Did you think we were leaving the drama behind? Not so my friends. Why miss a good opportunity to inflate and magni-fy (you’ll see) the Dilana story. We start off the show with the vibe after last week’s Dilana-thon. Ryan is apparently suffering from amnesia when he says that he never talks badly about his fellow rockers. Lie much?
Everyone’s all somber in deference to Dilana’s situation (which I don’t get since it was entirely self-inflicted) but Dilana’s brimming with rage/sadness/pain/more rage. She turns it around so that she’s the victim with Lukas comforting her. Then she flips out (literally, flipping the cameras the bird) and throws a glass which ends up cutting Magni’s head (it’s all fun and games until someone loses an eye). Finally, Dilana concludes her Days of Our Lives performance by sobbing in Storm’s arms.
The guys talk amongst themselves – Toby says he doesn’t get it because she’s had the sweetest ride of all of them and Ryan says that she can’t handle it and is self-destructing. First of all, I’m just nauseous from this whole production. When her sabotage attempt didn’t work, she went the victim route, to get the rockers and viewers back to her side. Did I mention the “sitting on the window ledge contemplating her actions” moment? This whole little episode is distracting from the essence of the show and I’m so over it and Dilana. This ain’t group therapy so just shut up and sing.
Naturally, Dave goes right into it, asking Magni how he’s doing. Magni laughs it off as a “flesh wound” and that he’s cut himself worse shaving. Then Dave asks Dilana how she’s doing and she says she’s just ready to “rock the $%#& out of this place.” She also says she’s full of… love for the rockers and she won’t do anything to hurt her friends again. A real Waltons moment, that.
It’s viewers choice so we see the rockers reacting to the song selection, with Storm freaking out the most. Dave calls up Lukas first. They show a little pre-interview first where we see more personality and guess what, our smurf is adorable. He says he was working at Hooters (hard to imagine him in those orange shorts) and he’s just like everyone else, except he wears more makeup. Can I adopt him?
Lukas: Lithium/Nirvana (previously sung by Dilana)
His take: He finally put it all together – he was working the crowd while twitching his ass off and exploring his vocal range. He also played around with the arrangement.
Judges’ take: Dave did another fakeout – “You rearranged a classic? Awesome!” TLee was “captivated” and Gilby called it Lukas’s best performance to date.
My take: When Lukas is on stage, I can’t look away. It’s not just the deranged smurf image but the whole package. This is going to sound weird but last night for the first time I thought Lukas was sexy.
Magni: I Alone/Live
His take: Faithful to the original, he pushed it vocally until we saw the veins in his head throbbing. In his pre-interview, he said he was campaigning to take the Aussie, Canadian and US votes away from Toby, Lukas and Ryan. He also said that he knows if he lands in the bottom 3 again, he’s Iceland bound.
Judges’ take: Dave thought it was killed but admitted that at this point it’s the roll of the dice. Gilby said that Magni gave an extra something and it came across.
My take: He was a hundred times better at last week’s results show. I didn’t see this as the performance to save him from the bottom 3. It was strong but not unique.
Ryan: Clocks/Coldplay
His take: How can I describe the athletic extravaganza that Ryan put on? He started at the piano, for the intro, then he kicked over the bench and jumped on the piano. After hanging out there for awhile, he ran around the stage. Then he slid across the piano like it was the hood of a car, played again and then crawled across the piano like he was Michelle Pfeiffer in The Fabulous Baker Boys. There was singing too.
Judges’ take: Dave loved the intensity and was excited to see that Ryan was willing to do all of that. Gilby called him an inspired artist but Jason said he seems a little lost when he’s not behind the piano.
My take: It was like watching Mission Impossible: Rock Star. I kept waiting for a backflip. There’s a fine line between putting on a show and being a show. The theatricality of it was a bit much for me, reminiscent of his Paint It Black performance.
Storm: Bring Me to Life/Evanescence (sung by two rockers already)
Her take: She was unfamiliar with the song but after a shaky beginning, did a great job, staying true to the arrangement while challenging herself vocally. Toby was awesome on the background vocals.
Judges’ take: Dave thought she was good but said that Toby stole a bit of the heat. Jason said effort counts.
My take: I don’t love the song but she took it to the crazy eye place and it worked. Dave’s right though, it gave Toby two chances to showcase himself.
Toby: Rebel Yell/Billy Idol (previously sung by Lukas)
His take: In his interview, they show him running around naked again (thanks!) and also punking people (seeing Ryan getting cake smashed in his face repeatedly made me happy). This performance was all merry prankster - he got the audience to sing along and ended with pulling girls up on stage to dance around him.
Judge’s take: Girls on stage - do you have to ask? Dave starts off with “I was worried” when he heard that Toby was doing this song and Toby responds “Yeah, so was I.” But Dave thought he rocked it. Gilby thought it was at a whole new level. TLee was obviously all about the girls and suggested that they take some of them back to the dressing room. Brooke says “You’ve already got the groupies” and Toby goes “First step, down.”
My take: I didn’t take Toby seriously for a long time, especially when he would get that terrified look in his eyes each week. Lately, Toby’s come into his own and with his increased confidence is bringing fun, energetic performances every week. And in contrast to Ryan’s flourishes, I totally got into the show Toby put on. And yes, I wanted to be one of those girls. More, more, more indeed!
Dilana: Mother, Mother/Tracy Bonham (previously sung by Jill)
Her take: She Dilana-fied it, going gravely and raw. She also climbed on top of the one of the guitarists, placing second in the night’s Rocker Olympics.
Look of the week: Rocking hair like Corey Glover from Living Color, she had pants that were parachute only on one side and was working some hea-vy eyeliner.
Judges’ take: Dave said this was his favorite performance from both seasons of Rock Star. TLee acknowledged last week’s drama with “say hello to the king of mistakes” to which Dilana replied she’s the queen. Gilby thought she delivered it well.
My take: I think Dave should look into buying some space in Dilana’s ass since he apparently loves living there so much. It was a solid performance but to say this was best of both seasons is just crazy talk. I’ve said this week after week, even before the issues came out - give me something new, take me someplace that I haven’t been yet. I still haven’t had that from Dilana but I guess I’m the only one since Supernova has practically put her face on the concert T.
Bottom 3: Storm, Ryan and Lukas.
Last night’s show kicked ass. Toby, Lukas and Ryan really stepped it up, delivering strong, memorable performances with lots of energy and fire. When Toby pulled those girls up on stage, I thought that it’s that kind of vibe that creates a rock show. I’ve been humming Rebel Yell since last night. It’s not just about the music, it’s about giving the crowd two hours of entertainment. There’s talk about a double elimination again because we have more rockers than time and it’s tough to call who hasn’t earned a place in the finale because all six have been working it hard. I think it’s too close to call but lesson to the rockers, having girls writhing on stage can’t hurt.
Mali Perl works in finance but her heart belongs to entertainment. She can be reached at mali@realityshack.com. After a season of Rock Star, she’s starting to think that multi-colored hair, full body tattoos and men in full makeup are all perfectly acceptable workplace looks.
